FAQs

What is in the Kits?

We keep the contents of our Kits a secret, so the recipient has the experience of opening up a surprise gift upon receiving it in the post. However, if you have any questions, or would prefer to know the contents before purchasing, just drop us an email at spooniesurvivalkits@gmail.com. We’ll be happy to send you digital versions of the ‘Contents Cards’ included in the Kits themselves, so you have a better idea of what’s inside. Each of our individual Kits, for example the Chronic Pain Kits, contain the same items, however the sizes and designs of the individual items within them, such as heat-bags, may vary.

Most of the items in our Kits are gender-neutral, however they tend to be more feminine in design. The Kits are suitable for a variety of ages: our past recipients have ranged from teenagers right through to elderly adults. On occasion, we may be able to modify a Kit to suit a child: please get in touch with us directly to discuss this.

If you have any suggestions for items you’d like to see in future kits, or crafters or entrepreneurs we should work with, we’d love to hear them!

Are these kits of a medical nature?

Our Kits are lifestyle-oriented. They contain items that aim to make your day more comfortable and enjoyable, rather than alleviate your symptoms from a medical perspective. As much as we would like them to, these Kits will not magically cure your condition or improve your symptoms. If you have any concerns about your medical condition, always speak to a professional involved in your care.

Can I send a kit directly to somebody else?

Absolutely. It’s our favourite thing to see people sending surprises to their loved ones! When checking out on Etsy, just enter their address, rather than your own. If you’d like us to include a gift note or message to somebody in with your order, just let us know what you’d like it to say by requesting this in the ‘Notes To Seller’ box, also found during the checkout process.

Do you ship worldwide?

Yes! Our shipping costs for the UK, Europe and Worldwide can be found on our individual Etsy listings, and can vary according to the weight of the Kit you’re purchasing. Our shipping prices are at face value; we charge what it costs us to post the kits, plus the price of the packaging materials and any additional protective wrapping. This is so that as much money as possible can be donated to charity and put back into the enterprise.

How long will it take to dispatch and ship my order?

Everybody who works on this project has a long-term illness, and we really appreciate your patience and understanding when ordering from Spoonie Survival Kits. We deal with flares, health scares and flights of stairs, and advise you to order your Kit in plenty of time for when you’d like to receive it. At present, we have one set day a week nominated for processing orders, and another set day for dispatching them. This means that for UK delivery, it can take around one to two weeks for your order to reach you, and up to an extra couple of weeks for international orders.

How much money is donated to charity?

Fifty per cent of the total sales money from each item (not just the profits) is donated to charity: to see what chosen cause we’re currently supporting and our totals raised so far, please see our social media. The remaining fifty per cent of sales money is used towards costs of running the project: purchasing items and materials, multiple administration fees e.g. website domain and maintenance, and developing new products. In the future, I hope to be able to offer volunteers paid opportunities out of this fifty percent, however this will never be taken out of our donation to charity, or made at the expense of the necessary admin fees for running the project.

How can I help?

If you’d like to join our little family as a volunteer, do get in touch! It’s been the most wonderful thing in the world to see chronically ill people all over the world come forward to see what they can do to help our little cause, even when they’re so poorly themselves. We advertise potential opportunities on our social media, and you can also contact us directly if you feel you have a particular skill or area of expertise you could bring to our team.

We do our best to ensure volunteering opportunities are all as accessible as possible: remote and flexible, and we work together to create an agreement that works for your lifestyle and your condition. In particular, we are always searching for talented crafters who can create and are willing to donate specific items for our kits. If you’re interested, please send an email with your CV and photos of your work, and we’ll get back to you ASAP.

If you are a business interested in having your items included in our kits, please drop us an email so we can discuss this further. If you’re also disabled or chronically ill and manage your own business, we’d love to hear from and work with you in particular. Alternatively, I’m always searching for ways to reward and promote the incredible volunteers who work behind the scenes on this project: if you can help with this, please do help a gal out and get in touch.

If you’re from the press/media and would like to help us promote SSK to a wider audience, we’d be more than happy to chat about this too, particularly if it’s an advocacy opportunity. If you’re a blogger, please bear in mind that our aim is to raise as much money for deserving causes as possible, and therefore we cannot often send out PR samples: I hope you understand our reasons for this. However, if you’d like to write about SSK regardless, we’d be more than happy to put you in touch with the volunteers and again, it would be wonderful to help promote the work they do. We’d also love to share your finished posts on our social media pages.

If you’d like to make a donation to contribute towards the numerous costs of running this project, I cannot tell you how much of a help this would be. Please let me know so I can send across the relevant bank details, and all of my gratitude. You can also help us to raise vital funds by purchasing a copy of our charity book, Dear Chronic Illness– you can find out more about this here!

And finally, if you have a question or concern that has not been addressed on this page, just head on over to the ‘Contact Us’ page and we’ll be happy to help as soon as we can. Thank you so much for your interest!
